Requirements prior to initial consultation

Health Check
It is a requirement of Animal Behaviour Coaching that your dog has had a recent health check with your regular veterinarian prior to initial behaviour consultation. If your dog has not had a health check in the past 1-2 months, and the behaviours are new or have worsened, then you may be required to book a health check prior to any further treatment or consultations.

Blood Test ± Urinalysis
A blood test (Complete Blood Count, biochemistry, and total T4) is recommended if safe to do so and won't cause excessive distress for your dog. It is not mandatory, and can be discussed during consultation if you have any concerns about any aspect of the blood test procedure. The blood test does not have to be on an empty stomach, however if they have just eaten a large meal, it can interfere with some of the blood test values. As such, a small/light meal and/or some treats during the visit is recommended. Please note that some dogs require an oral and/or injectable sedative/anaesthetic to be able to safely collect blood from them.
A urinalysis (or at the very least, a urine specific gravity) is recommended for any dogs over 7 years of age (or 5 years of age if a giant breed). It is indicated in any dogs that have house soiling issues, have a history of urinary tract disease, or those that have abnormal kidney values on their blood test. It is often helpful if you can collect a urine sample at home to take into your vet. You can collect a sterile yellow top container and get advice on how to catch a urine sample from your GP vet. The first urine sample of the morning is often recommended, and ideally taken on the same day as the blood test.

Video footage
It is recommended that you take multiple short videos of your dog's behaviour. We wish the videos to be representative of your dog's daily life, reflecting some normal behaviours as well as some of the behaviours you are concerned about (if safe to do so). Videos are a great supplement to the profile below, the behaviours observed in consult, and our discussions during consult. However, they are NOT mandatory for the initial consultation. Videos should be captured as/if they occur; please DO NOT set your dog up and/or compromise you or your dog’s safety or welfare to obtain a video. You can either submit your videos to ABC prior to your consultation (eg via email, WeTransfer, Dropbox, Facebook, or similar) or have on a device that allows you to share them with your vet during the initial consultation.

Floorplan
Unless the initial consultation is being conducted at your home, it is often useful if you provide a floorplan of your house and property. This helps us make more specific recommendations that are more likely to suit you and your dog. A video walk-through of your home/property is another option.

Pricing
An initial consultation usually takes 2 hours, however may take more or less time depending on your dog, concerns or problems you are experiencing, and your level of knowledge and experience. Animal Behaviour Coaching's current hourly behaviour consultation rate is $250 plus GST. Travel fees may apply to some consultation locations. Please Contact Us if you wish to discuss costs or payment options prior to your consultation.

Profile
Please complete and submit the profile below at least 24 hours prior to your initial consultation.
The information contained in the profile is used to help direct your initial consultation and ensures you make the most of your consultation time. It also helps ensure that components of your pet's behaviour are not missed, and increases the accuracy of the diagnosis and the likely success of the treatment plan. It is often helpful if all members of the household can be involved in completing the profile, particularly if they cannot be present during the initial consultation. This is because the dog may behave differently around different people and/or the views and perceptions of your dog's behaviour may vary between household members.

The profile takes approximately 30 minutes to complete, and you can save the form at any time to come back to it later (by clicking "Save", proceeding as a guest, and providing your email address to which a link will be sent). If you would prefer, you can click on the Downloadable Profile for a PDF version that you can complete offline, however please note that the form has not been fully optimised as a PDF yet so some sections will not function like the online form does.
